Indie Filmmakers Handbook / advance review

The Indie Filmmaker’s Handbook by David Byron (creator of NVF [New Voices in Film] Magazine) is a collection of helpful hints and interviews with indie screen stars that seeks to enlighten those interested in low-budget horror. Instead of a standard guide I was expecting, the book favors the real life experiences of filmmakers, writers, actors and special FX gurus. This offers eye-opening glimpses of the challenges and joys of independent filmmaking. Towards the end, the handbook also features some articles on “How to Make a Horror Film”, a “Horror Film Survival Guide”, and lists of noteworthy indie horror films, directors and gore scenes.

The interviews with many different people involved in low budget filmmaking were all very interesting. Though some of the questions were repetitive, there was a lot of useful information to be gleaned from such an expansive roster that included Hellraiser star Doug Bradley, writer/director Dante Tomaselli, legendary indie producer/writer/director/etc. Ted V. Mikels, and many talented women of horror, including April Burril, Michelle Tomlinson, Kimberly Amato, Brooke Lewis, Raine Brown and more! Each interviewee’s experience is invaluable to anyone interested in starting in the business themselves or who just enjoys indie horror!

The last part of the book features some neat resources, including a step-by-step guide on how to make your indie horror movie. This section covers writing the screenplay, filming and finding a distributor. This is a great primer on starting out, but I found it odd that it doesn’t include a section on submitting films to film festivals, a must for any indie film! I think it would have been helpful to list indie-friendly festivals that are such a big part of building a buzz for low budget films (just a couple festivals are mentioned in another list).

The next section is a funny “Horror Survival Guide” that gives such advice as: “If you are blonde, black or have big breasts, just give up now”. A very funny guide, but, again, it tends to be a bit repetitive. There are also sections where Byron lists his top 15 noteworthy horror films, notable indie filmmakers, top gore scenes and so on. I felt these were nice additions to the book, but could have been compiled into an introduction by the author instead of ending up at the end of the book in list form.

I was given an unfinished proof copy of the book to review, so I expect that the typos and formatting errors will be corrected before going to print as there were more than a few. Still, The Indie Filmmaker’s Handbook is a very fun read and offers up plenty of relevant advice for first-time low-budget filmmakers. I really enjoyed the numerous interviews with the filmmakers, actors, writers, etc. and their first-hand experience and advice would definitely prove beneficial for those hoping to make their own low-budget horror movie!

The Indie Filmmaker’s Handbook will be out Spring 2010! In the meantime, check out Byron’s kick-ass Queens of Scream: The New Blood, where yours truly is featured!
